MHS Theater: Beauty and the Beast

Every year Mishawaka High School (MHS) puts on three plays a year, including a musical. The original playlist informed the student body that 2017-2018’s school musical would be How to Succeed in Business Without Actually Trying.

However, there was an unexpected change in the lineup. The MHS troupe decided in December that Beauty and the Beast would take the place of the original selection.

Geneva Denny-Moore is a senior at MHS and has been the president of theater since the end of the 2016-2017 school year. “As president I try to listen to not only the active thespians but also I listen to the student body, and a lot of people [outside of theater] had no idea what I was talking about, when I told them what musical we were doing all I got were blank stares,” said Denny-Moore. When the theater changed the play, they got more responses than they thought. “I can't tell you how many times a student has come up to me and said ‘Omg I love Beauty and the Beast! I'm so excited to come see the show.’ We even had more people turn out for auditions than before,” said Denny-Moore.

The new play selection has got the actors riled up, too. “I feel great about the change. I think it is the best decision for us and I think everyone will love our adaptation of Beauty and the Beast,” said Justin Christensen, the actor playing the Beast. “I believe people will enjoy Beauty and the Beast more than the original play selection because Beauty and the Beast is a Disney classic and everyone knows it,” said Christensen. Gage Reynolds said, "I think the play change was a great idea. I got the part of Gaston and I’m really excited and we are going to put on a great show for everyone.” Caitlin Hess is the lead actress. “I think the idea to switch to Beauty and the Beast was a great idea. The show is so much more well known and I think a lot more people are excited to be in or see this musical compared to the originally planned one,” said Hess.

The play will be performed in the MHS school auditorium April 12th, 13th, and April 14th at 6:30pm.
